Below is a math update and basic fact clarification. I have had some questions, so I hope you find this helpful.
This week in math we are wrapping up the 2nd unit “Understanding Multiplication and Division.” In this unit students developed a basic understanding of these concepts, which they will further explore in our next unit on area. Please continue to have your child study his/her basic addition and subtraction facts if they do not have them mastered.
After the Thanksgiving break, I will begin to systematically teach strategies for multiplication and division basic facts. By mid-January, 3rd graders should be fluent in their 2, 10, 5, 1 and 0 facts. Many students are already beginning to learn their multiplication and division facts. I have attached is a sheet of the strategies used in class. The order in which the facts are taught are 2, 10, 5, 1, 0, 4, 8, 9, 6 and finally the remaining 3 and 7 facts. (We have briefly touched on strategies for the 2, 5, 10, 0 and 1 facts in class.)
Thanks for all you do to support your child in math at home and have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family!
