As I am sure you are all aware, next week is April vacation. The forecast looks good, and I am certainly looking forward to some sunny, warm weather! Your child does not have homework over vacation, but hopefully they will continue to read and practice their math facts. You may have noticed that a math challenge packet came home that includes a log. Your child may choose to hand in either the math challenge log, or the math log on the back of the homework paper. They do not need to hand in both logs.

Reminders and Updates:
Math: Students are learning to compare fractions with like denominators (1/4 and 3/4) and fractions with like numerators (1/2 and 1/8). They are also identifying equivalent fractions (2/4 and 1/2).
Basic fact test levels:
O(10,5,2), P(10,5,2&4), Q(10,5,2,4,8), R(10,5,2,4,8,1&0), S(10,5,2,4,8,0,1,9), T(10,5,2,4,8,1,0,9,3,6)
U – all the facts - (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10)
At this point in the year, students should be very close to mastering all their facts, and passing the level U fact fluency test in multiplication and division. At the end of the week, students who have mastered their basic facts will begin receiving their “Multiplication and Division License!” You will find you child’s level written on the front of their homework sheet.
Reading: This week, students will wrap up the social issue themes unit. Each reader is focused on meeting their individual third trimester goals for fluency, comprehension, or greater independence with targeted small group instruction. After April break, third grade readers will turn their attention from fiction to information reading with research clubs at school. Students should continue reading fiction in small groups and at home to stay focused on their goals.
Science: In science, the students will continue learning about recycling and how to keep our environment beautiful, clean, healthy and safe.
