I hope you had a nice Columbus Day weekend. Hopefully you have had a chance to look over the homework sheet and reminder form that went home on Friday.
Math – We are about to wind up the first math unit covering adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers, rounding, multi-step addition and subtraction story problems, place value, and perimeter. There will be an assessment next week on this material. I am sending a “Overview of Unit 1” packet home on Thursday with a more detailed explanation. Please continue to have your children study their basic facts. There are still quite a few third graders that are not fluent in basic addition and subtraction.
Writing – Your children have been writing narrative small moment stories. They have been working hard to elaborate their stories by adding vivid description, thoughts, feelings and dialogue. They have also been editing their stories checking for spelling, capitals and punctuation. Please remember to review the lifetime spelling words on your child’s homework sheet. Going forward they will be having spelling tests on Fridays.
Reading – 3rd graders are reading “just right” fiction chapter books in class. The book fair is this week, so it is a great opportunity to get your child some books they are really excited to read. We previewed books today and brought home a wish list today. Please send them in with money if you would like them to purchase books on Thursday or Friday.
Science and Social Studies – As I am sure you are well aware, the 3rd graders are very enthusiastic about our current science unit, Rocks and Minerals. They have also been studying communities and learning about elections in social studies.
