Below is an update on what is happening in math, reading and writing this week. Thanks for all you do to support your child’s learning at home!
Third graders are applying their multiplication and division skills to write and solve word problems. This week they will also be working on telling time to the nearest minute using the analogue clock.
Third grade readers are beginning a brand new unit called Reading to Learn. It focuses on important skills and strategies of reading non-fiction text such as identifying the main idea and supporting details and noticing different text structures. This helps them grow as readers (and writers!) of information. Students will continue to strengthen their fiction skills in targeted small groups and at home with choice reading.
This week in writing, third grade students are starting our information writing unit. They will learn the important strategies used to write information texts that are well-planned, well-crafted and well-researched. This week, the grammar focus will continue to be on pronouns, to clarify meaning. (A pronoun (I, me, he, she, herself, you, it, that, they, each, few, many, who, whoever, whose, someone, everybody, etc.) is a word that takes the place of a noun. (Joe saw Jill, and he waved at her, the pronouns he and her take the place of Joe and Jill, respectively.)
