Third graders from both classes gathered to hear Hanukkah stories, spin the dreidel for some gelt, and eat some latkes (potato pancakes) with applesauce or sour cream. Mrs. Johnson, our LEAP teacher, made dreidels on the 3-D printer and joined us to teach us about the "Festival of Light."
Election Day was very exciting on Friday! Our five candidates-- Emma, Kaylee, Alexa, Luca and Samantha--presented their speeches to the class. Students took turns at the voting booth to cast their ballots for three representatives. The winners from third and fourth grade will be announced at lunchtime on Monday.
We had a blast in Room 5 on Halloween!
A BIG thanks to the Pizzorusso family for the pumpkins and decorations, and to all the parents who joined us for the parade, celebration and goodies! Students are designing and engineering simple machines with a wheel and axle using VEX kits in our Stability and Motion: Forces and Interaction unit.
This was a week of “firsts!” We finished our first class book in readers’ workshop, Stone Fox. The students were so engaged in the dramatic ending of this classic book.
We finished our first Fundations spelling unit and the kids did a great job with the review patterns and rules from second grade and the new rules that were introduced. The Unit 2 pattern can be spread over three weeks and is not due until Monday, October 21st. This way, their practice work is on pace with the lessons. The students took their first fact fluency checkup on addition and subtraction. I sent home their results so they can continue to work on those facts, or move on to multiplication and division if they mastered addition and subtraction. Another first was diving into our first Project Lead the Way science unit called Stability and Motion: Forces and Interactions. It focuses on addressing a real-world problem through engineering and design. Our first Scholastic book order arrived this afternoon, so I will send the orders home with kids on Tuesday, which is Picture Day. Please send in order forms and payment for pictures on Tuesday. Enjoy the holiday weekend! Friday, September 28, 2018
The students were so excited to meet their first grade buddies from Mrs. Blasiak’s class and to be the older role models to younger students. Here are some highlights from our visit. Hello everyone,
Just a reminder that tomorrow is an early dismissal day at 1:05 pm. There’s no Running Club tomorrow (9/28) or next Wednesday (10/3). Also, the Fundations homework packets are due tomorrow, and so are the Scholastic September book orders. Please do not send cash. You also have the option of ordering online. Thank you and enjoy the Durham Fair this weekend if you go! |
