I wanted to let everyone know a more about our Social Studies unit about how government works. Later in the year, we will study Haddam history and the structure of local government. Kids will write speeches to tell about themselves and the changes they would like to see made in our school. They have been learning vocabulary related to this topic, such as:
Kids will begin to create slogans and election signs at school. After a casual mention of my memories of school elections where kids made up creative slogans or handed out souvenirs, a few enterprising candidates have shared campaign treats with us ("Vote for Jake, who made us cake!") and (Enjoy Brownies with Brett!") By no means is anyone required to bake or buy anything , but students who are really excited about running can work on posters at home. We are discussing the role of class officers and also decided that we could have "term limits" and hold a second election mid-year to allow other students to hold office.
Happy Running!
