You will notice that your third grader has TWO spelling packets for homework due Friday, February 8th. The Bonus unit packet was assigned last week, and the practice pages for Unit 7 went home on Monday, January 28th.  If you feel that your child needs additional practice, they can make flash cards to practice the sound-alike words (homophones) and practice spelling and marking unit words from the packets. Ask your child to explain the new rules they are learning-- you'll be astounded at how much they understand about spelling rules and patterns!

Our newest science unit, Variation of Traits, focuses on how different human and plant traits are passed down to the next generation. Students are learning how genotypes (genetic code passed from parents to children in the form of dominant and recessive genes) result in phenotypes (physical characteristics.) Examples of this are different color petals or stems on plants, and hair and eye color in humans. The petri dish in the photo shows the plants students grew to make observations about how plants from different generations of seeds can look similar and different.

Now is the time of year that third graders must increase their practice time on multiplication and division facts! Students should master the 2, 5, 10, 4, and 8 multiplication and division facts by February to stay on track for the end of the year expectation of mastery of all facts 0-10. Students who did not master addition and subtraction facts at the end of second grade must practice those facts along with multiplication and division.
