Our class went to Mrs. Johnson's room for science today. We started our first Project Lead the Way (PLTW) unit: Stability and Motion: Forces and Interaction. We will be having science class every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The students learned to log into their accounts this morning and are very excited to get started!
Today the students in our class were so excited to meet and spend some time with Charlotte's miniature show horse, Dually! Charlotte's mom incorporates equine assisted therapy into her work at their farm. Dually is certainly a special horse! The students each got the chance to learn a few commands and lead him through a small course with a jump!
It was wonderful surprise visit for our class and it put big smiles on everyone's faces...even Dually's!

The third and fourth grade Student Council election was held on Friday at Burr Elementary School. Twelve students (out of 18) in our class ran for positions on the BES student council! All of the students did an outstanding job with their campaigns and speeches.
The campaigning began on Monday as many creative campaign signs began to fill our classroom and our hallway. On Thursday, the students 'met' each other in an informal "Meet and Greet" activity in the classroom, to share and discuss some of their ideas. Friday the students gave their speeches. I am so proud of each and every one of them. Their speeches were strong, thoughtful, heartfelt and filled with many great ideas for our school. The students also did a wonderful job delivering them! (I really want to emphasize again, how PROUD I am of all of these students for going through this process.)
The class voted after all of the speeches were delivered, and the winners were announced at the end of the day on Friday.
Congratulations to all of our candidates for a very hard fought and tight race!!

It’s hard to believe that a month of school has passed by. The students in room 3 have continued to transition very nicely to 3rd grade. They already have our classroom working like a well-oiled machine! Each week the students are assigned a classroom job. It’s been so refreshing to see the students working hard to fulfill their responsibilities each day. They are all developing a real sense of pride and ownership in our classroom. The students are also demonstrating kindness and teamwork daily. For example, when a student is absent or unavailable to complete their job, there are always many eager volunteers to take on more responsibilities in the classroom.
I am so very proud of our classroom community.
**At home conversation starter: Ask your child what classroom job he/she has this week, or ask them what their favorite classroom job is and why.
Quick Halloween note:
Usually in third grade we get together in the classroom after the Halloween parade. If there is anyone who would be willing to organize and/or help with a class craft, or be a guest reader for a Halloween read aloud that day, please let me know. I am totally open to other ideas as well.

In social studies class the students have been applying what they have learned about Connecticut's history to work in groups and create their own early Colonial community. They are carefully selecting their settlement's location, establishing important rules, and planning out their ideas for trade, transportation and shelter. We are in the very early building stages and the students seem to be enjoying this group work in class.
Ask your child what the name of their community is and spark up some interesting discussion.
The grammar lesson this week focuses on using an apostrophe ' to make nouns possessive. The students are working very hard to grasp the power of the apostrophe!! We will continue our practice putting the apostrophe in the correct spot when a word is singular (ie...Mike's shoes) and also when a word is plural (ie...the students' desks).
Ask your child about the apostrophe challenge that we conquered at the end of class.
